Soooo, whaaatttt is this? Could it be a bud??? I’m really not sure…
I’ve made it to a month in this loc journey. There hasn’t been much change being that I was almost completely retwisted last week. My scalp still itches like crazy. I’ve started to oil it every other day instead of twice a week. That seems to be helping. I’m still moisturizing daily. My retwist looks older than a week. There has been alot of shrinkage since last week and my roots are really puffy.
After today, my plan is to update once a month, unless there are changes with my hair.
I’m in the 3rd week of starting my locs and today I had an appointment for a wash and retwist, which I was excited about because my scalp has started to itch quite a bit. The wash felt GREAT!!!! My scalp loved the attention. However, afterwards, I realized that my coils were gone!!!! I can’t describe how devastated I was. My heart sank because I felt like the part of my journey that I’d been through the past three weeks was in vain and I would be starting all over.
I asked my loctician had the coils come down and she confirmed that about 85% of them had. She assured me that this was part of the process and that because of my my hair texture it was to be expected in ratios. She stated that the nape is curlier and will loc faster and that it was well on it’s way. But, the crown, which has ALWAYS been a problem, is softer so it will take longer. She stated that the next time about 25% will stay and progress from there as my hair is being trained, hence her comment about ratios.
I can’t say that her explanation made me feel any better. But, I understand it. I guess this is my first lesson in patience as it relates to this journey.
3 weeks today…I decided to do a comparison of my hair over the course of the 3 weeks.
My scalp has started to itch quite a bit more. I’m oiling it twice a week as my loctician suggested. I also noticed that my coils look dry, even though I’m moisturizing daily. I’m happy that less of my scalp is showing since my roots have thickened due to new growth.
I have an appt for a wash and retwist Friday. I can’t wait because my scalp needs to be cleaned since I workout so much.
As of today, I’m two weeks in. Not much has changed. My roots are a bit puffy and I have some frizz. There is a bit more shrinkage but my coils are holding up pretty good, although a couple at my nape have now completely unraveled though. My scalp has started to itch sometimes, but it’s not bad at all. I have an appointment for a wash and retwist next week, so I’m just letting my hair do what it’s going to do and let my loctician take care of the unraveled coils so they can all be consistent and uniform.
Today marks one week since I started my locs and surprisingly they have held up well despite my workouts. I have two that have completely unraveled. One of them I recoiled because it was at my edges. The other I have yet to touch.
The coils have shrunken a bit since, but my hair seems to be adequately moisturized and I have not had much itching. I was told to oil my scalp twice a week, which I have done. I’ve also been spritzing it daily with Creme of Nature Argan Oil Strength and Shine Leave-In Conditioner that I diluted with water. At night I cover my hair with a satin bonnet.
So far, so good.
It’s official… I’ve committed to locs!
I’ve been playing around with the idea for months and today I decided to commit. I did ALOT of research and reading before making the final decision. I wanted to make sure that I was mentally prepared for this transition. I’m looking forward to this new journey of self-discovery, self-love, growth, and renewal.
Day 1 – Phase 1
Starter Locs from comb coils (Baby Locs)
My hair has really started to grow since I coiled it. I’m sure it’s because I don’t have to manipulate it everyday. Even though this has been the case, the shorter coils always tend to unravel. I assume this is due to me training so frequently and sweating.
So, I decided to get faux locs. I wasn’t crazy about them at first because the sections are much larger and stiffer than I’d like. I’m not sure if they fit my face. I bought some loc jewelry to accessorize with in an effort to jazz them up a bit. Still unsure about them. Maybe they will grow on me eventually.
Messing with them too much and caused one to start unraveling. I did the best I could to rewrap it. When I bought the loc jewelry, I’d also grabbed some braid/loc string, but didn’t know how I wanted to use it. It was perfect for repairing this loc. I kinda like it.
So, over the past few days I’ve been doing a lot of reading about locs…reading I should’ve done before I initially started on this journey. Today I decided to re-start. I clarified my hair to make sure I was starting with clean hair. I didn’t do this with the first set of twist. I’d twisted on 2nd day hair. After clarifying, I used a hair masque for 5 minutes, rinsed and spritzed with my water and oils mixture before retwisting with my loc sponge. I feel much better about the foundation for my locs now. So let’s see how this goes. I’m anxious.
